Privacy policy

Last updated: October 12, 2026.

Summary

HackNews asks for no sign-up. The site is supported by Google AdSense ads, which are only loaded if you accept them in the cookie notice. If you decline, no ads and no third-party cookies are loaded. To know how many people visit, we use Umami, a statistics tool installed on our own server, with no cookies and without keeping data that identifies you.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

If you accept ads, the page loads Google AdSense. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies and similar technologies to serve ads, limit how often you see them, measure results and prevent fraud. Google's advertising cookies let Google and its partners serve ads based on your visits to this site and other sites on the Internet, so the ads may be personalized. Google receives your IP address, browser data and the page you are on, and processes this data under its own policy. Legal basis: your consent (LGPD art. 7, I), which you can withdraw at any time.

You can turn off personalized ads in Google's ad settings, or opt out of third-party vendors' cookies at aboutads.info. See how Google uses data from sites that use its services and the Google privacy policy.

Visit statistics

Visits are counted with Umami, running on the HackNews server itself: the statistics are not sent to ad companies or to Google Analytics. It records the page viewed, the site you came from, the browser, system and device type, and the approximate country and city. Your IP address is not stored: it is only used during the visit to estimate the location and is then discarded. No cookies or identifiers are saved in your browser, and the data is only used as aggregate numbers. If your browser sends the "Do Not Track" signal, the visit is not counted.

We also count clicks on some links (for example: the trailer button, the "Watch on YouTube" link, and links to Steam). It is a total counter per button: no data about you is recorded, the search term you type is never sent, and your browser receives no cookie. With the "Do Not Track" signal on, no click is counted.

What happens when you visit the site

As with any site, your browser tells the server the IP address and technical connection data (browser, system), needed to deliver the page. The HackNews server keeps no access logs. The site is hosted on Oracle Cloud.

Text fonts are served by the HackNews server itself, with no request to Google Fonts.

Cookies and storage

HackNews itself sets no cookies. It only saves your choice in the cookie notice in your browser's local storage (key hn_consent), so the notice is not shown again. If you accept ads, Google AdSense may set its own cookies (such as __gads, __gpi and DoubleClick cookies) as described above. If you decline, none of them are set by this site.

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time: open the cookie preferences. Withdrawing consent reloads the page without ads. You can also delete cookies and site data in your browser settings.

See the cookie policy for the categories and how the notice works.

Links to other sites

Pages link to TMDB, AniList, Steam, YouTube, Wikipedia, news sites, Discord and LivePix. When you click, you fall under those services' privacy rules.

Your rights (LGPD)

Under Brazil's General Data Protection Law (Law 13.709/2018), you may request confirmation of processing, access, correction or deletion of personal data, and withdraw consent. HackNews itself keeps no data that identifies visitors, so there is usually nothing to deliver; data collected by Google through ads is handled by Google under its own policy. Any request will be answered. Talk to us on the HackNews Discord.

Changes

If the site starts using other third-party services (analytics, affiliate links), this page will be updated first and, when required, your consent will be asked again in the cookie notice.
